Recording Instrumentals

We're on the last stretch of the recording process for our debut CD, Old Time Noise, and Russ, our technical engineer, is working all hours to reach the finish line.

We thought it might be fun to let you in on some of our last moments in the recording studio, when we worked to add some additional instrumentals to our songs.

Here with musicians, Ron and Matt Oliphant.

And finally, Abbey and Russ working through a mandolin segment for one of the songs.

There's still time to enter your chance to win a pair of FREE tickets to our upcoming Bluegrass Concert on Saturday, September 29. See entry details here:

Album Cover

As we enter into the final process of making our CD, we're trying to decide on a cover for the album. Hard, hard, hard decisions. We wanted to use pictures taken at the Brown Mansion and plan to use two of the railroad pictures for the inside insert. So, here are our top three choices (in no particular order).

Cover #1

Cover #2

Cover #3

We could use some help in this decision. If you'd care to give us your opinion, please visit our Facebook Page where we are taking a poll or leave a comment below this post. Also, do you like the shaded edges? Do you like the fonts? Do you have other suggestions? Thanks so much for your help!

Main Photo Shoot ~ the Brown Mansion

Abbey and Maggie have always had a fondness for history, so when they were trying to come up with fun ideas for their main photo shoot, I casually mentioned that we might be able to take pictures at the Brown Mansion in Coffeyville, KS.

Their eyes sparked with enthusiasm at having a chance to visit one of their favorite historical sites in our area, so I immediately began my quest to make it happen.

If you've never visited or heard of the Brown Mansion, we highly recommend checking it out. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the three-story, 16-room home was built by W.P. Brown in 1904.

Some of our favorite features are the two-story entryway, the ballroom on the third floor, the Tiffany lead-glass accents and chandelier, and the verandas. But really, the entire home is absolutely charming--and the perfect setting for our main photo shoot.

The girls in the Taft Room, where President Taft rested when he visited Coffeyville in 1912. Pictures taken by our fabulous photographer, Angelyn Hobson.

We're saving the best photos for another time, when we hope to share with you some cover ideas for the CD. Until then, please let us know what you think. Do you love the girls' dresses and hairstyles? Do you think the Brown Mansion is a great setting for this photo shoot? Have you visited the Brown Mansion?

Getting Dolled Up

The first photo shoot now finished, the girls decided on something really fun for the main shoot. Part of that process included creating some great outfits and doing something new with the girls' hair. Thankfully, they have a grandma who is an awesome seamstress, and a talented cousin who is a beautician.

The girls wanted to go with a vintage look for their main photo shoot, and found a lovely Vogue pattern for their dresses.

Once the dresses were finished, we called on Nicki for some help with their hair.

Abbey wanted a new style but wasn't sure what to think of the "ratting" process.

It turned out pretty cute!

Maggie went for a haircut and style. They decided her hair was too thick for the Elizabeth Taylor hairstyle they first imagined.

So they tried again. Ta da!
Stay tuned for pictures from the main photo shoot at the Brown Mansion in Coffeyville, KS.

First Photo Shoot

There are two creative aspects in making a CD--the music part and the visual (ie. the cover insert.) This summer the girls scheduled two photo shoots in an effort to come up with some great pictures for the cover and insert.

The album they are working on includes both new and traditional Folk/Americana music, but even the new music has an old-time feel--thus the album title Old Time Noise. They decided on some outside shots in an effort to capture this theme, and chose an old bridge south of the Shaw bluff, a place they often ride their horses.

The album has a couple of railroad songs on it, so they wanted some shots on the railroad tracks north of Erie.

Our photographer, Angelyn Hobson, captured some fantastic expressions here.

Next up, they had pictures taken on a gorgeous porch in Erie. The girls changed outfits and pulled out their new instruments for this segment.

Everyone should have a chance to sip lemonade and relax with some music on a porch swing.

Their last stop that morning was their Grandma Vogts' house, where they had some shots taken in her sun room. All-in-all it was a fun morning, but the girls did get a little tired of smiling.

In the Recording Studio

This summer, Maggie and Abbey have had the privilege to record some songs in a recording studio. It came about after the Katy Days Got Talent competition, when Russell Head, director of the Recording Arts Technology Department at LCC, invited us to visit his studio.

What came next was a whirlwind of activity.

Hours of recording, listening, and trying various arrangements.

Right now, they're in the process of rerecording a few songs, including two of Maggie's original works. We'll keep you posted on when the CD will release. Fun times!
