New Review - KC Concerts

We received this really cool "review" of sorts in the Kansas City Star recently.

Kansas City Star, KC Concerts by BY BILL BROWNLEE

VOGTS SISTERS
Saturday, Aug. 11, at Knuckleheads

"Size doesn’t matter in old-timey music. The Nashville-based band Old Crow Medicine Show will entertain a throng of rapturous fans of vintage sounds in Kansas City on Wednesday, Aug. 15, while the Vogts Sisters will play in a room that seats only four dozen on Saturday. The intimacy of the latter show at the Gospel Lounge at Knuckleheads is likely to make it the more rewarding of the two experiences. Abigail and Maggie Vogts, a duo based in Erie, Kan., create charmingly unassuming folk music highlighted by glorious family harmonies."

Bluegrass Unlimited ~ Album Review

We are excited to share a new review we received from Bluegrass Unlimited, on our album, Broken Ties.

THE VOGTS SISTERS ~ BROKEN TIES

"This is a really nice project from sisters Abigail (guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Maggie (guitar, fiddle, vocals).

The interplay between the sisters makes this an easy CD to listen to, both vocally and instrumentally with uncluttered two- or three-instrument arrangements. The Vogts Sisters have produced a nice effort with good songs and a simple approach to the music." See the entire Bluegrass Unlimited review HERE.

Bluegrass Unlimited and Americana Rhythm Magazines

We are honored to have our new album, Broken Ties, listed in the June issues of  BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED and AMERICANA RHYTHM MAGAZINE.

Here's what Americana Rhythm had to say about the album on their SPINS page:

"It's hard to top sibling harmony. And it's nearly impossible to imitate. Sisters Abigail and Maggie Vogts have been touring together since 2012. Their latest CD, Broken Ties, their fourth, demonstrates their super tight sister harmony wonderfully."

Prove Me Wrong - Review

We were delighted to learn that one of our new album songs, Prove Me Wrong, was chosen for a lunchtime playlist at Ear to the Ground Music. Here is the review it received:

"I’m not going to say the Weepies or the Waylin Jennies or even I’m With Her… okay, so maybe I said it. But these two talented sisters are winning some hearts. The twangy Americana they make is guaranteed to melt your hearts and make you wish you were in the mountains, even if you’re the coldest city slicker. The lilting vibrato on the vocals are authentic while the string work feels as refreshing as the front porch breeze. I could listen to these talented ladies all day."

Prove Me Wrong was also featured in a weekly podcast at Sing Out! Radio Magazine. Listen to the show HERE.

Frank Gutch Jr Review - Broken Ties

We are excited to announce the first review for our new album, Broken Ties.

Frank Gutch, Jr., a previous album reviewer offered to review our new album when it came out, to which we gladly accepted. He did the review and sent it in to our Kansas Bluegrass Association's newsletter, but then we didn't hear any more from him. Sadly, we learned that he passed away at the end of April. We sent the review to a couple of Frank's online sites and they have published the review for Mr. Gutch. He are honored to have one of his last reviews and pray that he is in a better place now. Here is a portion of the review:

Broken Ties Album Review, by Frank Gutch, Jr. – April 12, 2018
"We need more Vogts Sisters in this chaotic mess of a world. We need to step back and breathe and concentrate on the good and not the evil. We need to acknowledge beauty without argument, accept the good in life. Maybe what we need is less city and more mountain in our lives. One thing for sure--- we need more mountain music in our lives.
What if I told you that some of the best mountain music you'll hear this year is coming from Kansas? I've driven through Kansas. Didn't see anything close to a mountain. I suppose the music of The Vogts Sisters is not technically mountain music, though there is something about it that makes me think West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. No twang to it, but just the same..."

Music Review ~ The Pittsburg Appeal

Earlier this month, one of our performances received a review by Jeremy Johnson of The Pittsburg Appeal. We actually noticed him scribbling things down on a notepad that evening, but didn't think too much about it. Below are a few highlights from the article. We LOVE that this guy understands our music and what we are trying to do. Read the entire review HERE.

Music Review: The Vogts Sisters @ Root Coffeehouse, by Jeremy Johnson

"Coffeehouse concerts can give off an “open mic night” vibe–i.e., informal and amateurish, the sort of thing musicians and listeners try to avoid. Musicians have to battle with screaming espresso machines for the audience’s attention. Sometimes nobody shows up but the musicians. Occasionally there’s awful poetry. In short, they can be a sad ordeal. - None of this was present at Root Coffeehouse on Friday night when the Vogts Sisters (pronounced “votes”) took the stage."

"Their instrumentation is various combinations of acoustic guitar, violin, and mandolin. The style is unadorned and simple, but therein lies its power, as it acts as a base for their most prominent feature: the vocals."

"The sisters sing in well-matched soprano (Abigail) and alto (Maggie), and every song is marvelously harmonized and skyward-reaching. And with this framework, the sisters conjure images of haunting clarity."

"It’s this understated darkness lurking at the edges of the sisters’ work that lends it some of its greatest value. The temptation here might have been to use their lush voices to make everything goopy sickly sweet, all bright and glistening surfaces–there’s a lot of music in this style that does just that, all glitter and no substance–but they don’t take the bait." BBC Radio and Another Album Review

We were thrilled to learn this past week that one of our songs,
The Loving Kind, debuted in the United Kingdom on BBC Local Radio on Marie Crichton's Country Show!
Ms Crichton had some very nice things to say, and we are delighted that she enjoyed our music enough to share it with her listeners!
You may listen in (for the next 25 days or so...) to the recording.
Ours comes in at around 27 minutes into the show.

My Own Dixie also received another album review!
This time at The Daily Country. Tara writes,

"Enchanting. Captivating. Delightful. The Vogts Sisters first original album, My Own Dixie is all of those things;
an album blending Folk, Americana and Bluegrass into something graceful and pristine,
filled with harmonies and instrumentation that are absolutely gorgeous."

Red Dirt Nation Interview

Earlier this month, we were honored to be included in a Feature Interview on Red Dirt Nation, by Bill Jones.

ERIE, Kan. – From their humble beginnings playing music in the backyard at family gatherings to award winning performances at various town festivals and theatres in and around Kansas, the Vogts Sisters have come a long way.
Their latest album, My Own Dixie, showcases entirely original material for the first time. Beautiful, folksy bluegrass plays over haunting vocals and harmonizing mature lyrics. Utilizing more instruments and guest talent this time around, one is provided with a rich listening experience that stays with you and proves they have what it takes to keep ol’ timey music alive and well.- Read the rest of the interview HERE.

Album Reviews - The Equal Ground and No Depression

Last week we received our first album reviews. We're excited to know that My Own Dixie is being well-received in the Indie Music Community.

The first review came from Ted Rogen at The Equal Ground, who ranked it as a Top Album!

"The Vogts Sisters who are actually sisters recently released an exceptional album entitled My Own Dixie. Maggie Vogts (acoustic guitar, fiddle, harmony vocals) and Abigail Vogts (acoustic guitar, mandolin, main vocals) have a surplus of talent that is immediately recognizable amongst the Americana/folk/country songs they play. The album is perfectly engineered which only adds to the warm, comforting tones that emanate from My Own Dixie." Read more HERE.

The second review came from No Depression, The Roots Music Authority since 1995, by Frank Gutch, Jr.

"It is Friday morning and I am awash in the beauty of musical DNA, that of The Vogts Sisters to be exact (You pronounce that Votes, sports fans). Listening to their new album My Own Dixie has reawakened my interest in writing a piece on DNA and music. There is something magical about familial voices, is there not?" Read more HERE.
