Ozark Folk Festival ~ Eureka Springs

This past weekend we traveled to Eureka Springs where we were finalists in the

Ozark Folk Festival Songwriting Competition.

Going to Winfield!

We recently learned that two of Maggie's songs were selected for the NewSong Showcase at Walnut Valley Festival! One song (religious category) won and the other (love category) was selected as an alternate. Which means...the Vogts Sisters will be performing on Stage II on Thursday, September 18 at 11:30 AM! Yay!

Before that, we'll perform Tuesday, September 16, for the Mini-Music Festival  sponsored by the Winfield Arts and Humanities at Baden Square (700 Gary Street). Performances run all day long, but you can catch our shows at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. 

We're looking forward to returning to Winfield. We performed there two years ago on the Kids Acoustic Stage, when we first started on this journey ~ Sweet Memories! 

If you're going to Winfield, we hope to visit you there! 

Bluegrass and Chili Festival

This past weekend, we attended the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, OK where we made it into the finals for the Best Country in the City singing competition. This was our first time to attend the festival so we had no idea what to expect. Anticipation.

As it turned out, we dealt with some "mapping direction" troubles as we made our way through Tulsa coming from the Kansas State Fair, which caused us to arrive only an hour before competition time. We managed to change into our dresses and do a little practicing beforehand. Stress.

There were 26 entries, and our drawing number was 20. The singers ranged in all ages, and we were the only duos who performed. We sang an original song (which will be on our new CD when it comes out) called Ballad of A Love Miscast. 

We are happy to announce that we WON! Thanks to all of you who were rooting for us. The $500 grand prize is greatly appreciated! Excited! 

After the competition, we had a chance to listen to the last concert on the main festival stage, the Sam Bush Band, who happens to be an awesome mandolinist! Unfortunately, we missed  another band we really wanted to see, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, who performed the same time as our competition. Great Music! 

Bluegrass and Chili Festival Singing Competition

We're excited to announce that we made the finals for the Best Country in the City singing competition to be held Saturday, September 7 at the Bluegrass and Chili Festival in Claremore, Oklahoma. 

The competition is for solo and duet acts singing country, folk, bluegrass, and gospel styles. The competition will be held Saturday evening at 8:00 PM. If you're in the area, make plans to attend. Highlights from 2012

2012 had many grand moments for us as we began this music journey. Here are a few highlights: 
Participating in the Katy Days Got Talent competition and making it to the finals.

Singing in Fort Scott and Cottonwood Falls.

Winning the Kansas Fiddling and Picking Folk Ensemble Championship in Lawrence, KS.

Performing at Walnut Valley Festival, Winfield, KS.

Our first auditorium concert with Kentucky 31, Parsons, KS.

Releasing our debut cd, Old Time Noise.

Ending our season with a second auditorium concert, this time with Jimmy Fortune and T Graham Brown.

Folk Ensemble Competition

This past weekend, Maggie and Abbey competed in the Folk Ensemble Competition at the Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championship held in Lawrence, KS. 

What started off as a rainy day, turned out to be a lovely afternoon in a park full of music and bluegrass fans of all ages. About an hour into the competition, the girls sang for their six minute time period. The judges were seated back behind a blue tent so they couldn't see the contestants, judging on sound alone, which was kind of cool. 

After a long day of listening to remarkably talented musicians (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and misc. instruments) the winners were announced. We held our breath as they announced the winners for the Folk Ensemble. 

The girls won first place! Yahoo! They received a nice chunk of money, a precious trophy, two certificates, and a t-shirt and gift certificate to Mass Street Music. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon.

Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championship

This next weekend, the girls will attend the Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championship in Lawrence, KS, where they will enter the Folk Ensemble Competition. This will be the first time to attend such an event, so we're looking forward to seeing and hearing many talented musicians. 

We're still waiting to find out if Maggie or Abbey won a place on a spotlight stage at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield. We hope to hear back in the next week or so and will keep you updated. Thanks for your friendship and support! It means so much to us. 

Katy Days Got Talent

This summer Abbey and Maggie have scheduled a few singing events. The first event was a talent contest for Katy Days in Parsons, KS. The first night they sang and made it into the top ten finals. 

The next day they sang Traveling Soldier but didn't get into the top 3. Still, it was a great experience, and they received some sweet feedback from those in the audience. 

Next up, they're traveling to Cottonwood Falls for the Flint Hills Folklife Festival, where they'll perform during the music events Friday and Saturday nights. If you're in the area, be sure to stop by and say hello!
